Health insurance for your pet will cover you if you are confronted with veterinary costs. There is a difference between costs for surgical operations and other veterinary costs. Luko covers 80% of the costs for your pet's unexpected, necessary surgical interventions.
What is insured?
Luko's Pet Health Insurance covers 80% of the costs from unexpected, necessary surgical interventions – worldwide. Do you want more? Include the reimbursement of veterinary costs add-on and reduce your deductible to 0%.
Sum insured
The sum insured is the maximum amount that we will cover if your dog or cat has to undergo surgery:
- The sum insured is €1,000 for the first 12 months from the start of the insurance (1st benefit section);
- The sum insured is €2,000 (2nd benefit section) for the first 24 months from the commencement of cover;
- The sum insured amounts to €20,000 (3rd benefit section) in the first 24 months from the commencement of cover.
This is insured
Does your pet need surgery because of an illness that occurred after you took out Pet Health Insurance? We feel for you and your fluffy friend. We keep you financially secure and will reimburse the following costs, including:
- Necessary operations under general anaesthetic;
- Vet fee up to 3 times the rate of the Fee Regulations for Veterinarians (GOT);
- Post Operation hospital stay up to 20 days per insurance year;
- Necessary medication after the operation for a maximum of 20 days per insurance year;
- Protection abroad (12 months & worldwide);
- Press contribution for a runaway, insured animal, up to €250 per incident;
- Euthanasia.
Co-insured is a one-time Health Bonus for e.g:
- Chip Implementation/Tattooing;
- Protective vaccinations;
- Worming;
- Flea and tick control;
- Dental prophylaxis;
- Castration or sterilization.
This is not insured
There are a few exceptions which are not included in this protection. We do not cover costs in the following cases, e.g.:
- Treatments that have been started or recommended by veterinary care before the conclusion of the contract;
- Treatment or operation to correct congenital, genetic, or developmental abnormalities;
- Operations designed to establish the respective breeding or breed standard.
We do not reimburse costs for, e.g.:
- Outpatient and inpatient treatments;
- Necessary diagnostics such as X-rays, ECG, ultrasound, blood and tissue samples, urine and stool diagnostics;
- Laser therapy;
- Homeopathy and acupuncture;
- Treatments of allergies due to hyposensitization;
- Chiropractic and osteopathy.
However, you can easily protect these above exclusions with the Veterinary Cost Coverage add-on.

What is covered?
- An insured event shall be deemed to be veterinary medically necessary treatment when illness or accident of the insured animal causes an impairment to its health;
- Independent of veterinary necessity, the insurance benefits of the health lump sum are considered as an insured event.
Insured events are for example :
- Treatments required by veterinary medicine;
- Analgesic dental treatment including extraction;
- Accommodation in a veterinary clinic or veterinary practice;
- Medicines, bandages, remedies, and aids, up to the maximum rates applicable in each case as set forth in the German Veterinary Fees Ordinance (GOT).
Co-insured is a health lump sum for e.g.:
- Chip Implementation/Tattooing;
- Vaccinations;
- Worming;
- Flea and tick prevention;
- Dental prophylaxis;
- Castration or sterilization.
When and in what amount the health lump sum is paid depends on the selected tariff and results from the insurance policy.
The sums insured for your contract are listed in the insurance policy.
What is not covered?
Not insured are e.g. expenses for:
- Treatments already started or advised before application of the contract;
- Treatment or operation for congenital, hereditary, genetic, or developmental abnormalities;
- Operations to produce the respective breeding or breed standard;
- Treatment for other diseases including: Wobbler syndrome, Brachycephalic syndrome;
- Congenital malformations such as: positional anomaly of the testis, dilatation of the esophagus, prolapse of the nictitating membrane;
- Preventive or voluntary examinations and treatments;
- Dentures and correction of dental and jaw anomalies;
- Treatment of damage caused intentionally.
Are there any cover restrictions?
- Staggered benefit limits apply from the commencement of insurance:
- up to 12 months max. €1,000;
- up to 24 months max. €2,000;
- from 24 months max. €20,000 (per claim). - Animals with previous illnesses can be insured. Damage occurring in direct connection with the previous illness is not insured;
- A general waiting period of 30 days applies.
