There are many benefits to getting on your bike more often. Not only for yourself, but also for the planet! In this article, find out what the popular two-wheeled transportation has to offer. We are sure that this will convince even the last few nay-sayers to ride a bike more often.
The trend towards biking
Cycling is becoming increasingly popular. The number of bicycles in Germany has increased by more than 12 million in the last 15 years. Accordingly, there are now no less than 79 million bicycles per 83 million inhabitants in Germany. Many not only have a bicycle, but now also a second bike. This is still a long way from beating our neighbouring country, the Netherlands (where there are 23 million bicycles per 17 million people). But we are well on the way! But why is that? What are the advantages of cycling? We'll show you!
1. Cycling is healthy
It's certainly not a secret: cycling is not only a practical way to get from point A to B, but it also improves your health. It keeps you fit and strengthens your immune system. As a kind of cardio workout, it also helps you make your lungs more functional. Despite the physical activity, cycling is easy on the joints - as long as you use a light gear and pedal steadily. Cycling also builds endurance or can help you lose weight because it burns calories. And who would have thought it? Even the less strenuous ride of an e-bike is good for your (physical) well-being and gets your cardiovascular system going.
2. Cycling also promotes mental health
The topic of "mental health" is on everyone's lips and has increasingly become a topic of conversation rather than a taboo subject. Therefore, this aspect should not remain unmentioned. Cycling offers a lot of benefits for mental health, because cycling activates happiness hormones! After just 30 to 40 minutes on the bike, the body releases serotonin and endorphins. Being out in the fresh air and (ideally) in the sun lead to more mental well-being. Studies also show that anxiety and depression can be significantly reduced when endurance sports, such as cycling, are practiced.
3. You are mobile with the bike
There is a demonstration in the city centre. Or maybe there's a traffic jam. With a bike, you can easily get around almost any situation. The bicycle is manoeuvrable and faster than most means of transportation. You can spontaneously take a different route than planned without much effort. You don't need a driver's license to ride a bike. The bike license you took at school ages ago is not a document you have to present officially. So don't worry, you can put it on file now if you still carry it around with you. Nevertheless, you should know a few basic traffic rules, use bike lanes (if available), and generally take care of your own and others' safety (e.g. wear a helmet, have functioning lights and brakes, etc).
4. Cycling is cheap
In fact, with the bike you may save some euros! Apart from the costs for the bike purchase (including equipment) and maintenance, you don't have to spend much money for cycling. You don't have to pay for gas, you don't have to pay for parking, and you don't have to deal with expensive ticket prices. The bicycle is probably the cheapest means of transportation there is! Tip: If you don't want surprising costs if your bike is stolen, take out Bicycle Insurance. It only costs a few euros a month and usually also covers the lock and fixed parts (e.g. saddle or handlebars).
5. Cycling is eco-friendly
Another noteworthy advantage of cycling: it's environmental friendly! The bicycle is a so-called "zero-emissions vehicle", because no exhaust gases are emitted when cycling. If you cycle to work, you save on average about 310 kilograms of CO2 emissions per year. So you're doing your part to protect the planet and climate. In addition, bicycling causes fewer accidents with animals than cars, offers no noise-pollution, and has a comparably small environmental footprint.
6. The Cycling Experience
When you're on the road with your 2 wheels, you can discover new corners. When you're in the car or on the train, you probably always take the same routes; with the bike you can take different routes. You can get to know completely new sides of your surroundings and experience a lot. Think of all the beautiful bike tours you can take - in Germany or all over the world. Take your friends with you, because cycling is also a social activity and connects people. For some, cycling is like a vacation, for others it's like meditation. So what are you waiting for? Get on your bike and start cycling with all this background knowledge. Luko wishes you a good ride!
